When I started my career in corporate 28 years ago, the business world looked much different. I mean, I was working in the paper industry when fax machines were still popular and the Internet didn’t exist yet.

But that’s only part of it.

At that time, it was common to begin a job with the expectation that you’d be there for a long time. You planned to climb your way up the corporate ladder, and eventually retire.

Today, it’s not uncommon for people to stay in a job for two years and then move on to something else. We’re not as focused on building our resume to show a progress of titles earned within one organization; instead, we’re shifting our mindset towards building a portfolio of skills.

The business world is changing drastically. It’s difficult to pinpoint where you’ll end up in your career five years from now, let alone 10. How do you stay inspired? How do you stay focused? How do you know what direction is the best route to take?

Today’s Ask Anita addresses all of these crucial questions, and more.

While it can feel overwhelming trying to keep up with the fast-pace of change, it’s also an exciting time to be in business. There are always new skills to learn, and we are constantly growing and changing. This means our wants and needs will also change.
